Thanks to recent data from the Times of San Diego and Rent Café, we know that three San Diego suburbs now have more renters, than homeowners.
This is not surprising considering that the number of renters nationwide has grown by 22% in recent years, especially as people from all generations are now renting instead of buying homes.
Where are the three counties in the San Diego area that have more renters than homeowners? They are Vista, Coronado and La Mesa.
In each of these San Diego suburbs, the renter population has grown by 50%, or more, since 2010 and we can expect the renter population in the San Diego area only increase in the coming years as cities like Escondido are projected to move from homeowners to renters.
Will San Diego Become A Renter Population?
The San Diego area has always had a strong renter population, thanks to the military presence in the area, which sees many renter tenants come and go each year.
Although the communities of La Mesa, Coronado, and Vista now have mostly renter populations, the reality is that it could be a while until we see more San Diego suburbs convert to renter populations because the San Diego area still has a healthy number of owner-occupants that live here.
Besides the San Diego area, the Rent Café study also showed that Los Angeles County has a high contingent of renters, followed by Sacramento and the Bay Area.
