San Diego Tenant Protection Ordinance Signed, Will Go into Effect on June 24th, 2023.

The San Diego rental market is about to change again as Major Gloria recently signed a new Tenant Protection Ordinance on May 25th, 2023 to slow down the tide of evictions in San Diego which are at a 5 year high.

Going into effect on June 24th, 2023, the new ordinance is expected to strengthen tenant protections, reduce evictions, and slow the rise of homelessness across the San Diego rea.

What’s In The New Tenant Protection Ordinance?

Eviction protection – Will start on day one of tenancy. These protections will also protect a tenant from no-fault termination, or eviction due to a substantial remodel.

Relocation assistance – Tenants who are evicted, for no fault of their own, will be entitled to two months relocation assistance, or three months’ rent, if they are a senior or person with disabilities.

Strengthens existing protections – Existing statewide protections will be strengthened including when an eviction can and cannot be used for a no-fault termination.

Relocation Options – Should eviction occur, tenants will have more options for temporary relocation.

Accountability Measures – Last of all, tenants will also have additional legal resources at their disposal including buyout agreements and exemplary damages.
